The agency initially declared the nation’s mpox outbreak a public health emergency in August and renewed the declaration in November. In December, HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said the U.S. was not planning to renew the declaration for another 90 days, citing a low number of cases.

“But we won’t take our foot off the gas – we will continue to monitor the case trends closely and encourage all at-risk individuals to get a free vaccine,” Mr. Becerra said in a statement.

The CDC has reported 30,093 mpox cases linked to the outbreak and 26 deaths as of Jan. 25. Globally, more than 85,000 cases have been confirmed.
