The VA touts an Energy Star score of 83 of 100, with 75 or above considered at “top performer,” and sources 18 percent of its total energy from renewable sources like biomass and wind. In 2017, the health system achieved 18.1 percent renewable electricity use and increased facility recycling to 53.5 percent of all solid waste. The health system collected more than 11,252 pounds of electronics recycling during its 2017 Earth Day recycling event. To further green initiatives, Minneapolis VA Health Care System adopted a safer chemical focus, using ultraviolet disinfection and spending 64 percent of its cleaning chemicals budget on green cleaning chemicals. Practice Greenhealth named the hospital among the 2017 Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award honorees.
