The U.S. has now confirmed more than 2,000 measles cases in 2026 — a milestone that arrives with roughly half the year still ahead and no clear sign of the outbreak slowing.
Here are five notes from the CDC’s June 5 report:
- As of June 4, 2,030 confirmed measles cases have been reported in the U.S. in 2026. Cases have been reported across 40 jurisdictions, with 10 additional cases among international visitors.
- Ninety-three percent of confirmed cases — 1,890 of 2,030 — are outbreak-associated, spanning 30 new outbreaks reported in 2026. Of those, 558 stem from outbreaks that started this year and 1,332 from outbreaks originating in 2025.
- The 2,030 figure puts 2026 on pace to surpass the full-year 2025 total with roughly half the year remaining. For all of 2025, 2,288 confirmed measles cases were reported across 45 jurisdictions, with 48 outbreaks and 90% of cases outbreak-associated. For context, between 2021 and 2024, annual confirmed case counts were dramatically lower — 49 in 2021, 121 in 2022, 59 in 2023, and 285 in 2024.
- MMR vaccination coverage among U.S. kindergartners has declined from 95.2% during the 2019-2020 school year to 92.5% in 2024-2025, below the 95% threshold needed for community immunity, leaving an estimated 286,000 kindergartners at risk. The CDC has noted that pockets of unvaccinated populations can sustain outbreaks even in states with otherwise high coverage rates.
