Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center. Over the past few years, HackensackUMC has transitioned to LED lighting, replaced its chillers with new energy-efficient models and used a biodigester to divert roughly 250,000 pounds of food from landfills. HackensackUMC also reduced its medical waste by nearly half in just one year and has taken on all six HHI Challenges. These efforts, and more, earned HackensackUMC a spot on Practice Greenhealth’s list of Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award honorees in 2015, as well as Circle of Excellence awards for leadership, chemical reduction, environmentally preferable purchasing and greenhouse gas emission tracking.
