Gundersen Health System (La Crosse, Wis.). In 2008, Gundersen Health set a goal to control rising energy costs and improve health, and it reached a major milestone in 2014 when it became the first health system in the nation to achieve energy independence. Building on that success, in November 2015, the system produced more energy than it consumed from fossil fuels. Gundersen’s sustainability efforts have been formally recognized with multiple awards. For instance, it earned four Circles of Excellence Awards from Practice Greenhealth this year: the Leadership Circle, Less Waste Circle, Energy Circle and Climate Circle awards.
