On Feb. 2 the hospital hosted a forum to discuss youth mental health. Officials said the level of hospital admissions and emergency room visits by patients in acute mental health crises has been so high that the system has had to occasionally open a tent outside to accommodate the volume of patients.
Jenna Glover, PhD, a child and adolescent psychologist, said the demand and waitlist for children’s services is “unreal.”
In 2021, young patients visited Children’s Hospital’s emergency room more than 6,500 times for mental health reasons.
Colorado youth experts attributed this increase to the ongoing pandemic.
Before the pandemic, 10 percent to 12 percent of teens experienced anxiety and depression. That number has increased to about 25 percent, according to the report.
