The CDC is tracking more than 24,000 cyclosporiasis cases and 700 hospitalizations tied to ongoing outbreaks across the U.S.
Four things to know:
1. As of Aug. 11, the CDC has recorded 13,895 laboratory-confirmed cases across 47 states, including 740 hospitalizations. Another 10,455 cases are still awaiting lab confirmation.
2. The pace of new infections appears to be slowing, ABC News reported Aug. 12. Case totals rose by roughly 2,000 over the last week, down from an increase of more than 22,000 the week before, though the CDC cautions a six-week reporting lag means numbers will likely keep climbing.
3. A portion of the national total stems from a multistate outbreak tied to recalled iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and sourced from central Mexico. That outbreak has sickened 6,358 people and caused 278 hospitalizations across at least 15 states. The FDA has said the true case count is likely higher than reported and may extend beyond the states currently identified.
4. Michigan health officials have reported two deaths connected to the outbreak, both involving people with significant underlying health conditions.
