The case-fatality rate of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is 19.2%, a marked improvement over previous Bundibugyo virus outbreaks, which had mortality rates of 25% to 50%.
There have been about 30 Ebola outbreaks since 1976, with the last one ending in November 2025, and this is the second outbreak of Bundibugyo virus.
Here is the latest on the Ebola outbreak.
1. Belgium and the European Commission have rejected the Trump administration’s request to impose travel restrictions for those traveling from Central African countries and take on tighter border rules.
“The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control currently assesses the risk to people in Europe as very low,” an EC official said. “At this stage, exit screening in the region is deemed sufficient; there is no evidence that additional measures are needed upon entry.”
2. The Trump administration’s response to both Ebola and hantavirus is facing backlash, especially in light of President Donald Trump’s criticism of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, NPR reported. The administration imposed mandatory federal quarantine orders on two American passengers from the cruise ship hit with hantavirus and wants round-the-clock guards for some other passengers quarantining at home. For Ebola, the administration has imposed temporary bans for people from some Central African countries and blocked Americans who catch Ebola from returning to the U.S. for treatment.
3. As of June 10, Congo has 676 confirmed cases and 136 deaths. Almost 300 patients are currently being treated in Ebola facilities and 22 people have recovered. Uganda has 19 confirmed cases and two deaths, and one probable case and one probable death.
4. Since June 1, the outbreak in Congo has spread from 16 health zones to 25. An international team of experts estimates the outbreak could be as large as 1,354 cases.
5. Amid concerns of possible Ebola spread during the FIFA World Cup, the World Health Organization said the risk of Ebola spreading in other countries outside is low.
