Performance ratings for the FDA and CDC have hit an all time low, according to an Oct. 15 Gallup poll.
Gallup asked 1,000 U.S. adults to rate the job performance of 12 federal agencies and five Cabinet departments as excellent, good, only fair or poor. The poll was conducted Sept. 1-17.
Here is what to know.
1. The FDA and CDC are the lowest-rated of the 12 agencies and the only ones with higher poor ratings than excellent/good ratings.
2. In 2019, 64% of Americans rated the CDC excellent/good. That share fell to 40% in 2021 and now stands at 26%, down five points from 2025.
3. The FDA has historically been rated lower than the CDC. Twenty-five percent of Americans now rate it excellent/good, statistically similar to 27% last year.
4. Ratings differ by political party. Democrats’ rating of the CDC dropped 14 points this year, to 20%, while Republicans’ ratings improved from 19% in 2024 to 32% this year. Thirty-six percent of Republicans rated the FDA excellent/good, up from 23% in 2024, compared with 18% of Democrats, down from 47% in 2024.
5. A Wellcome Global Monitor survey found trust in science has dropped worldwide, and the share of people with little or no trust in science has grown from 13% in 2018 to 19% in 2025.
