Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Boston). Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s newest building, a research and clinical center that opened September 2016, attained LEED Gold certification for its reduced energy consumption and environmentally friendly design. From 2012 to 2016, Brigham and Women’s Hospital increased recycling from 12 percent to 30 percent, reduced regulated medical waste from 16 percent to 10 percent and increased composting from 1 percent to 12 percent as part of the Healthier Hospitals Initiative. Over that time, the hospital estimates saving $30,000 on a 5,600 ton waste stream. The hospital received a Partner for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth in 2016 and the Mayor’s Carbon Cup at the Greenovate Boston Awards for its commitment to a 35 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 2020.
