The ASA’s Committee of Trauma and Emergency Preparedness also cautions physicians to consider the risks of helping in Japan’s relief efforts without proper support. “There is much unrest in a disaster zone, and the potential for harm is great,” the ASA wrote. “There are limited basic resources such as food and shelter. You want your work to make a difference. Please connect any efforts with an established group who can support you throughout the journey.”
The ASA provided links to websites that provide situational updates, as well as more information on radiation exposure and treatment. The ASA stated its appreciation for members’ philanthropic efforts and stressed that Japan will need assistance for months and years to come — not just in the weeks when the disaster is making headline news.
