“We had very low turnout last year,” a hospital spokesperson told Becker’s, adding that many community members opt to get their flu shots at local grocery stores or pharmacy chains that offer gift cards in return for vaccination.
Huntsville Hospital is still offering flu vaccines for its own staff members, the spokesperson said.
Health officials in a nearby county also reported low demand for the flu shot this year. The Marshall County Health Department vaccinated 175 people during its annual drive-thru flu shot clinic Oct. 13, the lowest turnout in seven years, according to Sara Shelton, BSN, RN, clinic supervisor at the health department.
At 881 beds, Huntsville Hospital is the second-largest hospital in Alabama and serves as the regional referral center for northern Alabama and southern Tennessee.
