Possible Ebola patient at Northwest Texas Hospital

Two people who recently returned to Texas from Liberia are being monitored by the City of Amarillo Public Health Department for Ebola and at least one was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, according to a News Channel 10 report.

The two people, a mother and her child, did not show any symptoms when they first arrived to the U.S., but the child developed a fever, according to the report. In addition to being evaluated at the hospital, they will be monitored by public health officials twice a day for 21 days, the incubation period of Ebola.

"We have been planning for such an event since September," said Public Health Director Casie Stoughton in a statement. "Community partners such as fire, AMS, police, emergency management, environmental health, airport, animal control and county agencies have been instrumental in proper planning and response. By following these protocols we're greatly reducing the likelihood of exposing others."

According to a statement from Northwest Texas Hospital given to News Channel 10, "all infection control and isolation procedures have been utilized including the use of personal protective equipment."

Northwest Texas Hospital is not one of the country's 55 hospitals designated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an Ebola treatment center.
