Police shoot gunman outside care facility where patient in vegetative state gave birth

Police shot and injured a gunman who fired his weapon March 11 outside of the Phoenix-based Hacienda HealthCare care facility where a patient in a vegetative state gave birth in December, reports NBC News.

Three police officers, privately employed by Hacienda, discovered the man standing over a woman in the facility's parking lot, according to Sgt. Armando Carbajal, a spokesperson for the Phoenix police department. The man fled when officers approached, but still fired his weapon in the woman's direction, according to Mr. Carbajal. An officer shot the man and "ended the threat," Mr. Carbajal told NBC News. The man is hospitalized in critical condition.

Hacienda said the gunman is the ex-husband of one of its staff members in a statement to NBC News. The organization also noted he did not gain access to any Hacienda facilities.

"We are releasing this statement to prevent misinformation, and to reassure the families of our residents that their loved ones were not in danger. Our security worked as intended and it continues to be improved on a daily basis," Hacienda said in the statement.
