Flu shot manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur sent a letter dated June 27 to physicians nationwide, notifying them it was 3-4 weeks behind in production because the World Health Organization and the Food and Drug Administration had been late in sending their recommendations. Both organizations typically recommend which components of influenza should be incorporated into the yearly vaccine.
The WHO postponed releasing its guidelines because of a late-emerging strain from the last flu season, A/H3N2.
Meanwhile, GSK will be distributing its vaccines on time. The company announced July 15 it would begin shipping over 40 million doses to healthcare providers and pharmacies.
