Physician-owned hospitals fare well in Hospital Compare star ratings

Just 251 of the 3,553 hospitals that received a star rating from CMS earned the best possible five-star rating, and 84 of those fall into a specific category: they are owned by physicians.

In fact, while 40 percent of all participating hospitals received a four- or five-star rating on Hospital Compare, a whopping 67 percent of participating physician-owned hospitals earned a four- or five-star rating.

Blake Curd, MD, president of Physician Hospitals of America, called the numbers “astonishing, but not surprising.”

“Physician-led healthcare delivers high-quality results,” he said. “When you couple patient satisfaction with CMS quality data, there is no doubt patients do much better when they are treated at a physician-owned hospital.”
