“We have been, for a long time, saying it’s always a matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if,'” Ann O’Rourke, MD, a surgeon and trauma medical director at UW Health, said of the emergency department’s active shooter response efforts, according to WKOW 27.
Dr. O’Rourke oversaw the ED’s active shooter preparation plans Sept. 19 after being warned of a potential influx in gunshot patients from the shooting. Prior to receiving patients, an alert went out on the WI-Track system, which notified all Madison hospitals of the possibility of a mass casualty event.
“I think it actually went really well. It was the middle of the day, so there were a lot of us here,” Dr. O’Rourke told WKOW 27.
As of Sept. 22, two victims were treated and released from University Hospital in Madison. UW Health spokesperson Gian Galassi told WISC-TV a third victim is still recovering and is in fair condition.
