Study Finds Maryland Hospitals Reducing Medication Errors

A new study, which tracked 35 Maryland hospitals between 2005 and 2007, found that the hospitals made significant improvements in reducing errors associated with mislabeling medications and educating healthcare workers on safe drug use, according to a report in the Washington Business Journal.

According to the study, safety scores for acute-care hospitals rose nearly 10 percent with regards to medication delivery. The highest scores overall were seen in keeping hazardous chemicals away from drug-preparation and patient areas and restricting access to medication in each hospital unit.

The study found that hospitals could improve in communicating medical orders and educating patients on medication, according to the report.
