Study Finds Licorice May Reduce Post-Operative Sore Throat

A recent study by researchers at the Medical University of Austria, in Vienna, in collaboration with Daniel I. Sessler, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Outcomes Research at the Cleveland Clinic described in Clinical Anesthesiology, suggests gargling with a licorice solution before surgery may reduce post-operative sore throat associated with removal of an endotracheal tube, according to a Somnia Anesthesia blog post.

In the study, patients undergoing surgery that required a double-lumen endotracheal tube gargled a licorice solution or sugar water for 30 seconds. After surgery, the incidence of sore throat was significantly less in patients who gargled with licorice compared to the sugar water.
