The standoff ended when the man fatally shot himself. Hospital personnel attempted to save the man’s life but were unsuccessful.
The man was previously held under psychiatric evaluation through the Baker Act. The Florida law allows families to have a loved one with a mental health condition temporarily detained for psychiatric evaluation and medication if they meet certain criteria.
“The hospital has returned to normal operations and continues to be open for care including the emergency room,” Baptist Hospital said in a statement cited by NBC 6 South Florida. “The safety of our patients, visitors and employees are our priority.”
