RWJUH earns Rare Disease Center of Excellence designation

New Brunswick, N.J.-based Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital has been designated a National Rare Disease Center of Excellence by the National Organization for Rare Disorders. 

The designation was earned in partnership with Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, also based in New Brunswick, according to a Dec. 3 news release from RWJBarnabas Health.

The newly designated center will be led by director Sabahat Bokhari, MD, and co-director Naveena Yanamala, PhD. 

Dr. Bokhari is a professor in the division of cardiovascular disease and hypertension at RWJMS, and director of the Cardiac Amyloidosis Center and advanced cardiac imaging at RWJUH. 

Dr. Yanamala is an associate professor of medicine at RWJMS, section chief of clinical research and director of the Center for Innovation at RWJUH and RWJMS. 

The center is the first in New Jersey to receive the designation, bringing the number of states  with a NORD-designated center to 26, the release said. 

RWJUH is part of West Orange, N.J.-based RWJBarnabas Health’s heart and vascular care network.
