Gary Michael Smallwood, 40, attacked the nurses around 6:30 a.m. this morning with scissors and a knife, injuring the male and female nurses. The female sustained a puncture wound in her upper chest region, and the male received lacerations during a struggle to take the knife from Mr. Smallwood, according to the Knoxville Police Department. Both nurses are being treated at the Medical Center in North Knoxville and are expected to make a full recovery.
Mr. Smallwood was brought to the Medical Center by an ambulance on Sunday after police were called to investigate his belligerent behavior at a Greyhound bus station, according to the report. Police said he also has a medical condition.
A KPD spokesman said Mr. Smallwood is unsure of his surroundings, including what city and state he is in.
