After rolling out a rapid sepsis diagnostic tool across its network, Baton Rouge, La.-based FMOL Health achieved a 24% reduction in sepsis mortality over the last two years.
FMOL Health, which operates 10 hospitals across Louisiana and Mississippi, said June 2 it is the first health system in the world to launch the tool, IntelliSep, across its entire acute care network.
IntelliSep — developed by San Francisco-based Cytovale in collaboration with FMOL Health and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge — detects sepsis in under 10 minutes. Our Lady of the Lake North Baton Rouge Emergency Department became the first freestanding ED to deploy the test, according to FMOL Health.
According to a University Park-based Pennsylvania State University-led study published in 2023, the sepsis test demonstrated a survival rate of 95%.
Since rolling out IntelliSep across its enterprise, the system has evaluated more than 50,000 high-risk patients across Louisiana and Mississippi, and achieved a 19% mortality reduction among non-sepsis patients, a 14% drop in antibiotic utilization and a 12% increase in safe ED discharges.
“Innovation in healthcare is not just about adopting new technologies; it’s about transforming patient care and outcomes,” said Christopher Thomas, MD, FMOL Health vice president and chief quality officer.
Dr. Thomas estimates IntelliSep has saved roughly 30,000 hospital days, or the capacity equivalent of an 85-bed facility.
Full systemwide completion is slated for September 2026, with final implementation at Our Lady of the Lake Livingston in Walker, La.
