The Joint Commission launched two outcomes-driven certifications March 30: one for perinatal care and the other for cardiac procedures.
The perinatal care certification will evaluate hospitals’ maternal and newborn outcomes and patient care experiences. The cardiac certification will encompass several common cardiac surgeries and procedures, which the commission will assess through operation-specific outcome measures, readmissions and patient experience data, according to a news release from the organization.
The Joint Commission, which accredits and certifies thousands of U.S. healthcare organizations, said the outcomes-driven certifications are a departure from “traditional models that emphasize process compliance.”
These are the first outcomes-focused certifications offered through The Joint Commission. Both certifications are voluntary and available for commission-accredited hospitals.
