Connecticut Children’s Specialty Care Center in Hartford has received a $14 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to learn why some children respond differently than others to treatment of GI conditions related to Crohn’s disease, according to an April 20 press release.
The grant was awarded to Jeffrey Hyams, MD, division head of gastroenterology and a Crohn’s disease specialist, who will focus on what causes the chronic intestinal inflammation in patients with Crohn’s disease as part of a five-year study.
The number of children diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at the hospital has doubled in recent years, which is prompting Dr. Hyams research.
The $14 million grant is the largest ever received in Connecticut Children’s history, according to the press release.
