CHLA posts nation’s best outcomes for pediatric liver transplants

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has the highest survival rates for pediatric liver transplants in the U.S., according to newly released data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.

The hospital reported 100% one-year and 98.4% three-year patient survival for liver transplants performed during the reporting periods ending in 2024 and 2022, respectively. CHLA performed 29 pediatric liver transplants in 2025, making it one of the highest-volume centers in the nation and the top-performing program in the Western U.S.

The program is known for taking on highly complex cases. In 2025, CHLA surgeons performed a liver transplant on a 2-week-old infant — the youngest in California history — by reducing and tailoring a split adult liver for the 7-pound baby. The team also completed synchronous transplants on two pediatric patients using grafts from the same donor liver.

Hospital leaders attribute the program’s strong performance to its integrated, multidisciplinary care model and ongoing investment in research to advance liver transplant outcomes.

“These are surgeries that only a handful of programs in the country can perform,” Kambiz Etesami, MD, chief of abdominal organ transplantation at CHLA, said in a news release. “Our goal is to expand access to transplant for children who previously would not have been candidates.”
