The requirement for ACGME-accredited programs becomes effective on July 1, 2011. While the simulation experience can be provided in a formal simulation center, ACGME does not require that any program use a formal simulator or have a simulation center. However, programs are encouraged to incorporate surgeons and nurses into the simulation experience.
ACGME also believes that a formal debriefing mechanism is an important component of each simulation session in order to ensure that participants receive meaningful competency-based outcomes assessment.
