A blood test correctly identified 87% of stage 1 and 2 pancreatic cancers, according to a study published Sept. 16 in Nature Medicine.
For the study, researchers from Duarte, Calif.-based City of Hope tested the PANXEON liquid biopsy in nearly 1,800 patients across the U.S., Europe and Asia.
The test identifies three biomarkers — circulating microRNAs, exosomal microRNAs and the protein CA19-9 — and assigns a single AI-generated pancreatic cancer risk score.
The test’s false-positive rate was 3% among low-risk patients and 16% among high-risk patients. It also detected precancerous high-grade dysplasia in more than 64% of cases.
The test is designed to complement, rather than replace, existing diagnostic strategies by flagging high-risk patients for further evaluation, researchers said in the release.
