Before being shot by the police, the man was able to fire at least one round, but police officials will not say whether the shot was directed at St. Luke’s. They have confirmed, however, that no one was hit. As a precaution, the hospital locked down for several hours Wednesday afternoon.
“Thanks to the swift action by our hospital security and the San Francisco Police Department our patients and staff were safe and protected during this event,” a hospital spokesman told Becker’s. “We continue to cooperate with the police department in their ongoing investigation.”
The motives of the man — who has not been identified yet — are still unknown.
“We have no idea why he did what he did at the construction site,” San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr told the Chronicle.
According to the report, the man was armed with two guns: a handgun he had used to rob a sporting goods store in San Bruno, Calif., roughly 10 miles away, and a shotgun he had just stolen from the store he robbed.
The construction site the man climbed belongs to St. Luke’s. The hospital is currently building a 120-bed hospital and medical building on the site.
“As of 10 p.m. last evening we resumed normal operations at our CPMC St. Luke’s Campus hospital,” the hospital spokesman told Becker’s. “We have counselors on site today to interact with our staff and to provide any assistance they may need.”
