A patient at Newburgh, N.Y.-based St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital received a bloody wheelchair while seeking treatment for a sprained ankle last Thursday, reports News 12 Westchester.

The patient recorded a cell phone video of the contaminated equipment, showing blood stains on one of the chair’s foot rests.

A St. Luke’s spokesperson confirmed the wheelchair didn’t meet hospital standards and said employees immediately moved the patient once they became aware of the situation.

Corrina Doole, who accompanied the patient to the hospital, said they had to alert staff of the blood stains multiple times before they received a new wheelchair.

“They just had no sense of urgency,” she told News 12. “That hospital needs to evaluate their staff and protocols for cleaning their equipment.”

St. Luke’s officials, who are investigating the situation, said patient safety is a top priority at the hospital.
