Parkridge Health implements alert system to help identify sepsis

Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Parkridge Health is using a sepsis prediction system that monitors patients' clinical data for signs of developing infection.

Sepsis prediction optimization of therapy is an algorithm that can continuously monitor a patient's EHR data including vital signs, lab results and nursing reports to help pinpoint best treatment methods. If a data pattern appears that indicates sepsis, the algorithm alerts technicians in the SPOT command center to issue an alert to the patient's bedside nurse, who evaluates the patient and administers treatment if sepsis is not ruled out.

SPOT was developed by Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare clinical and information technology experts. The data scientists used data gathered from millions of hospitalizations of patients who did and did not develop sepsis to develop and train the algorithm.
