Parkland Memorial was at the center of controversy last year when state investigators uncovered a wide range of patient safety violations last year, including infection control deficiencies, inadequate emergency services and improper nursing staff levels. It nearly lost its Medicare status but agreed to enter into a systems improvement agreement with CMS, under which the hospital partnered with consulting group Alvarez & Marsal to help remedy the patient safety deficiencies.
The monitor acknowledges there is more work to be done. Parkland Memorial has until April 2013 to meet federal standards for patient safety and quality or else it risks losing its Medicare funding.
