To create the grant, the OREF partnered with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Cigna Foundation and several anesthesia societies. Possible research topics may include a broad range of issues pertaining to orthopedic surgery and underlying health concerns that may influence outcomes. Viable topics include safety culture, patient communication, test and treatment appropriateness, and obesity, among others.

“The safety of our patients is uppermost in every orthopedic surgeon’s mind,” said David Lewallen, MD, OREF president. “This research is a natural extension of OREF’s mission to improve the practice of orthopedics through research.”
