The British National Health Service’s program is based on lean production techniques gleaned from the automobile industry. Nurses from Providence Portland (Ore.) Medical Center, Oregon Health & Science University, Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, and St. Charles Health System in Bend have adopted and tweaked the program so it is one “designed by nurses, for nurses,” according to the report.
Strategies from the program include a “sacred space,” in which nurses can safely prepare medications without being interrupted. Providence Portland estimates efficiency measures under the program will help nurses save 250 hours in the next year.
