NYC reports 1st pediatric flu death

New York City reported its first pediatric death of the 2018-19 season Oct. 26, according to ABC7NY.

Oxiris Barbot, MD, New York City's acting health commissioner, said the victim was a child, but did not share any other details about the death.

At present 2 percent of all hospital visits in the city are for flu, according to Dr. Barbot. She also noted between zero and eight children die from the flu annually in New York City.

The estimates 80,000 people died in the 2017-18 flu season and recommends everyone age 6 months and older receive a flu vaccine by the end of October.
