Why this AdventHealth CNO rewrites the nurse career ladder every year

The most challenging part of building nurse career ladders is ensuring they address individual nurse needs at every point in their career, Cathy Stankowitz, DNP, RN, chief nursing officer for AdventHealth’s Central Florida Division, said in an upcoming episode of Becker’s “Clinical Leadership Podcast.”

Dr. Stankowitz oversees more than 10,000 nurses in her division, and building a career ladder flexible enough to meet each of their needs takes constant adjustment. Her approach: listen and adapt.

“We review our career ladder every year,” she said. “When nurses share their challenges with us, we listen and adapt the ladder to those needs.”

Those needs have led to providing tuition assistance up front instead of having nurses pay out of pocket first, creating career navigators who help nurses reach their goals and adding more career pathways. It has also meant ensuring professional excellence programs include well-being options, such as giving nurses points for participating in a 5K.

“So the challenge is really about listening to the different generations, understanding what nurses need at specific times in their lives, and creating the flexibility to support all of their unique needs so they feel whole,” Dr. Stankowitz said.
