The study, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, also found that contract nurses are more likely to be younger, male and non-white. Roughly one-third (33.2 percent) of supplemental nurses in 2008 were people of color compared with fewer than one in five (17.4 percent) permanent nurses.
The researchers argue that these findings suggest contract nurses may be used combat the challenges of an aging nurse workforce and looming nursing shortage.
