Mr. Helsel, a firefighter in Maryland’s Prince George’s County, was born in the back of an ambulance, and on the day he turned 42, delivered a baby in the back of an ambulance, according to The Washington Post.
The birth occurred Monday after Mr. Helsel and another firefighter loaded an expectant mother into an ambulance headed to University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly.
“As soon as she got in the ambulance, the baby’s head” appeared, Mr. Helsel told The Washington Post Monday. “Everything was good with the delivery, albeit in the back of an ambulance.” The baby girl and her mother, as well as the firefighters, then continued to the hospital.
The experience is similar to how Mr. Helsel was born. Mr. Helsel said in the report his mother called 911 and then gave birth to him while en route to Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Md.
