Ohio NP creates ‘Doc in a Box’ kit

Toi Worthy, MSN, a family nurse practitioner in Ohio, was inspired to create a kit for at-home health monitoring after learning she had high blood pressure five years ago, Spectrum News 1 reported June 16.

“I discovered it by mistake,” she told the station. “I was teaching a patient how to use her blood pressure cuff, and once I discovered that … it really put me in a place of being a patient and understanding how patients feel when they are diagnosed.”

Ms. Worthy said she was in denial about her high blood pressure, but ultimately made several lifestyle changes that allowed her to stop taking hypertension drugs about a year ago.

The “Doc in a Box” kit, which Ms. Worthy started selling in 2020, features a cardiology-grade stethoscope, pulse oximeter, wrist blood pressure cuff, noncontact thermometer and a health resource guide.

The kit is designed to help consumers monitor their vitals to address any health concerns before they become more serious.
