New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill has signed legislation eliminating certain practice restrictions for advanced practice nurses, allowing some to independently provide primary and behavioral healthcare services.
The law makes permanent the independent practice authority for qualifying advanced practice nurses as a temporary waiver tied to a joint protocol requirement was set to expire, according to a March 30 news release from the governor’s office.
The legislation also allows eligible advanced practice nurses to prescribe medications without a joint protocol with a collaborating physician.
Earlier this year, Ms. Sherrill extended a state of emergency for an additional 45 days to avoid the expiration of pandemic-era waivers tied to joint protocol requirements, which were set to end Feb. 16.
