The researchers interviewed health providers in labor and delivery units at two hospitals in Toronto, Canada. The results revealed many respondents lacked training in anesthesia and an understanding of the anesthesia process during labor and delivery. In addition, anesthesiologists were less involved in decision-making for patients, which could potentially jeopardize safe delivery of care, according to the report. The results also found imbalances and tensions between anesthesiologists and other providers.
The researchers suggest a need to create a culture of teamwork and provide adequate training to ensure the safety and quality of care.
