Designers of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which requires the exchanges, hope to cover 27 million of the uninsured population by 2016, according to a report by Kaiser Health News.
Texas and Florida, among the states with the largest number of uninsured residents, have been allotted the most money by far — $8.15 million and $5.85 million, respectively.
The grants were made available only to states that would have federally run or partnership exchanges, not to states that opted to run their own. Those states were eligible for separate block grants.
