The Alabama Board of Nursing has resumed online license renewals six weeks after a cyberattack forced it to switch to paper applications, AL.com reported Oct. 22.
A ransomware attack detected in August took the board’s online licensing system offline Sept. 1, affecting more than 80,000 nurses. Investigators confirmed some data was collected and downloaded. During the outage, hospitals and clinics have been unable to confirm the nurse licensure status of hiring and currently employed nurses; and the board was unable to issue an Alabama nursing license number.
The board launched a new license management system for renewals, which it had been building for about a year before the attack, according to the report. Other portals are still being developed. About 60,000 nurses with single-state licenses must renew by Dec. 1, and the deadline has not been extended. The board also waived continuing education documentation for this renewal cycle.
