The Lucy Byard Scholarship was established to help overcome racial and economic disparities in healthcare and education, according to a Sept. 8 press release from Adventist. It honors Lucy Byard, who in 1943 was transferred from Takoma, Md.-based Washington Sanitarium to Washington, D.C.-based Howard University Hospital because she was Black.

If recipients continue to meet the academic and need-based requirement of the award, they will be eligible to apply for an additional $20,000 next year.

Adventisit HealthCare has committed to dedicating $500,000 toward the scholarship fund over the next five years.
