The union representing nurses at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston has filed a lawsuit against the hospital for a policy that would require nurses to receive flu shots to retain their jobs, according to a Boston Globe report.

The Massachusetts Nurses Association said the hospital’s mandate, which has not yet gone into effect, could potentially result in firing employees who refuse vaccination. This would violate a state regulation that prevents hospitals from requiring employees to receive vaccinations if they do not want to, according to the report.

Brigham and Women’s worker vaccination rate is 77 percent, below the 90 percent average of other Boston teaching hospitals, according to the report.
