Nebraska infection specialist team sent to Uganda for Ebola research

University of Nebraska Medical Center and Nebraska Medicine, both in Omaha, sent five infectious disease experts to Uganda to train healthcare workers in infection control practices, according to the Omaha World Herald.

Medical Teams International, an Oregon-based nonprofit that provides support for refugees fleeing from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Uganda, requested help from UNMC and Nebraska Medicine. Some refugees may have contracted the virus, which raises even more concern for health officials trying to contain the epidemic.

"Hopefully, we reinforced the skills they will need to contain any cases that may come across the border," James Lawler, MD, an infectious disease expert and leader of the Nebraska team, said. "The fluidity of movement across the border is a tremendous challenge to case identification and control of spread."
