15 residents fleeing California Camp Fire exposed to norovirus in shelter

Fifteen to 20 people fleeing the California Camp Fire have become ill with norovirus while staying at Chico, Calif.-based Neighborhood Church, according to The Sacramento Bee.

Lab tests from California Butte County Public Health Department have confirmed the evacuees  have norovirus, Lisa Almaguer, spokesperson for the department, told The Sacramento Bee.

Fire evacuees staying at the South Oroville, Calif.-based Church of the Nazarene shelter have also shown symptoms of norovirus, but have not received lab testing for confirmation. About 166 people are staying at the facility.

About 170 people are staying at the Chico shelter, Diane Shoen, shelter manager at the American Red Cross, told The Sacramento Bee.

Several residents indicated they heard of one or more evacuees quarantined due to health issues. One resident said he saw a resident "puking into a toilet."

Shelter workers indicated they have started taking sanitation steps by quarantining sick people in different rooms and giving out hand sanitizer.
