Natividad Medical Center Issues Action Plan After CMS Finds Medication Safety Deficiencies

Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, Calif., issued an action plan after CMS discovered safety violations during a January survey of the hospital, according to a Mercury News report.

The survey was conducted for reaccreditation under Medicare and revealed many deficiencies, including:

•    Failure to dispose outdated medications properly
•    Failure to properly administer potential life-saving medication during testing
•    Failure to properly monitor and document pain medication and insulin given to patients
•    Failure to secure emergency medications

Other deficiencies include improper documentation of patient records, poor equipment maintenance and inadequate nutritional, dietary and food preparation practices.

The hospital swiftly issued a corrective action, which included additional staff members and training. The media was able to obtain details of the survey findings under the Freedom of Information Act. If the corrective action plan is accepted, CMS will conduct a follow-up survey of the hospital to determine its compliance. Failure to remedy the deficiencies could endanger Natividad Medical Center's Medicare funding.
