Gail Walenga, PhD, PUSH director, told the Exponent, “We have continued to raise awareness of mumps on campus as a way to remind people that good hygiene is always important to reduce the spread of communicable diseases. We do verify, as required by state law, that all new students coming to campus have received their vaccinations (or have an approved reason for exemption).”

In May, a mumps outbreak that began at Midland University in Freemont, Neb., spread to other surrounding counties after infected students returned home for summer break.
