Confirmed mumps cases in Nebraska now at 23, more cases expected

As of Tuesday, an outbreak of the mumps in Nebraska that began at Midland University in Freemont and spread to other counties has infected 23 people. Health officials are anticipating more cases to come, according to KVNO.

"We've seen cases crop up now exported off of campus, and we expect to see maybe additional generations of mumps as it spreads from one person to another," Tom Safranek, MD, an epidemiologist with Nebraska's Department of Health and Human Services, told KVNO.

According to the CDC, two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine is 88 percent effective in preventing mumps infections.
